Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr. was born in Long Beach, California on October 20, 1971, parents Vernell Varnado and Beverly Tate. Vernell was named after his stepfather, Calvin Cordozar Broadus Sr. (1948–1985), who was a Vietnam War soldier, singer, and mail carrier who left the family barely three months after his birth. His father was mostly absent from his life.
His parents called him “Snoopy” as a child because he resembled the Peanuts comic character. He was the second of three sons born to his mother. In 1975, his mother and stepfather separated. Broadus began singing and playing the piano in the Golgotha Trinity Baptist Church when he was very young. He began rapping in sixth grade.
